Well, I’m quite glad I backed the Ruskies to win Euro 2008 at 22/1. They’ve been spectacular in their last two matches and Arshavin has been the revelation of the tournament. Here’s hoping there’s more to come from him. It was a splendid game and a great performance all round (51 shots on goal) and was what footie should all be about.
Then there was the Italians.
Utter cynicism.
Toni finished the tournament without even looking like scoring.
A terrible game ‘dominated’ by Spain but ruined by Italy. Oh how we cheered when they lost on penalties. But it begs the question; are the Spanish good enough to win the tournament? I don’t think so.
In terms of my predictions; well I thought Russia and Germany would be in the semis, and they are; and that Italy would beat Spain in the other quarter final. Well, I got the teams right but not the result.
I honestly think Russia can do it. My bank manager hopes so to.

The Scottish football team go out of every tournament they ever play in in different ways.
It’s like 50 ways to lose a tournament.
]
Tonight’s exit versus Italy was particularly disappointing because, for the first time, it was at the hands, not of a dirty cheating scum team (which Italy were far from) but at the hands of a dirty cheating scum referee. One, Manuel Mejuto González of Spain.
The foul he gave against Alan Hutton that led to Italy’s 91st minute winner was beyond shameful.
This is him. The Spanish Twat.
It was, frankly, verging on the corrupt.
Hobbies? Snorkelling? Aye, snorkel my arse.
Scotland were immense.
And, for the record, Alan Hutton was my man of the match.
I felt very proud, and very cheated.
Get it up you Manuel Enrique Mejuto Gonzales.

I cringed in great pain after Torres scored in the Euro 2008 Final tonight when Motty uttered the immortal line.
“That’ll be well received in Liverpool.”
Mark Lawrenson , who normally I cannot abide, came to the rescue;
“It will be very well received in Madrid too John.”
OK he never once mentioned 1966, I accept that, but the Liverpool observation was a careless one. A very, very tedious and careless one and unquestionably reflective of the liferaft that most commentators were hanging onto throughout the tournament; that these achievers were playing, in great number, for Premiership teams.
Some of them, like Torres, even played for the perennial underachievers, Spain, who won the tourny.
Motty: goodbye from the big time, and thank you for the great fun you have given us over the years.
We love you really.
You were, and are, one of the greats.
But sheesh, just remember; football doesn’t stop at Dover.
