Stating the obvious

I purchased this cup of coffee from a dispenser at the cinema. Now, bearing in mind that the vending machine ONLY dispensed coffee the warning seems a little unnecessary. Don’t you think? Or is it merely optimism?

  1. aye, well…the necessity to state the obvious has arisen cos a couple of companies were sued as a result of people being scalded by hot drinks…so companies do it to reduce (if not become exempt from ) liability…not that we are becoming as bad as Americia in terms of compensation culture or anything

  2. Pat’s comments reminded me of the classic song “Everybody’s a Victim” from The Proclaimers joint-best album “Persevere”

    Everybody’s a victim
    Seems we’re going that way
    Everybody’s a victim
    We’re becoming like the usa
    Everybody’s a victim
    Seems we’re going that way
    Everybody’s a victim
    We’re becoming like the usa

    I demand recompense
    For sitting on the fence
    Throughout my adult life
You’ve got to put my parents in jail
    For raising me in fife
It doesn’t matter what I do
You have to say it’s alright
And I need you to send somebody around
To tuck me in at night
    Because..

    Everybody’s a victim
    Seems we’re going that way
    Everybody’s a victim
    We’re becoming like the usa

    Well it’s not my fault
    That I’m positive
I just stuck a needle in my arm
    And nobody told me
    That sixty a day
    Would do me any harm
My liver’s shrivelling like a leaf
But it’s not the whisky that doo’s it
Call me irresponsible Instant Song Lyrics
And I’m really going to lose it
    Because..

    Everybody’s a victim
    Seems we’re going that way
    Everybody’s a victim
    We’re becoming like the usa

    Wear a ribbon for this
    Hug a stranger for that
Light a candle to the dead
    And soon you’ll forget
    That you ever had
    A brain inside our head
    We value everythin the same
    We turn it into farce
So we don’t know a crisis
‘Till it kicks us up the arse
    Because..

    Everybody’s a victim
    Seems we’re going that way
    Everybody’s a victim
    We’re becoming like the usa
    Everybody’s a victim
    Seems we’re going that way
    Everybody’s a victim
    We’re becoming like the usa
    Everybody’s a victim
    Seems we’re going that way
    Everybody’s a victim
    We’re becoming like the usa

  3. And the wondrous Joe Jackson song.

    Everything
    Everything gives you cancer
    Everything
    Everything gives you cancer
Theres no cure, theres no answer
    Everything gives you cancer

    Dont touch that dial
    Dont try to smile
    Just take this pill
    Its in your file

    Dont work hard
    Dont play hard
    Dont plan for the graveyard
    Remember –

    Everything
    Everything gives you cancer
    Everything
    Everything gives you cancer
Theres no cure, theres no answer
    Everything gives you cancer

    Dont work by night
    Dont play by day
    Youll feel all right
    But you will pay

    No caffeine
    No protein
    No booze or
    Nicotine
    Remember –

  4. hey – I wasn’t defending the practice…merely explaining how it has come about!

personally I think the whole ‘complain=blame-claim’ culture is abhorrant…not to mention the fact that stuff like that belittles valid complaints where someone really should be held accountable

  5. and if we are quoting lyrics (as we clarly are boys)…my response to Mark is in the words of Kirstie McColl:

Now don’t come the cowboy with me Sonny Jim
I know lots of those and you’re not one of them
There’s a light in your eyes tells me somebody’s in
so don’t come the cowboy with me

  6. All I can sing to that is…

    It’s a tragedy
    That you hurt me
    We don’t even try

    You’re as much to blame
‘Cause I know you feel the same
I can see it in your eyes
But I’ve got no time to live this love
No, I’ve got no time to play your silly games
    Silly games

    Silly games
Silly games (No, don’t wanna play)
    Silly games (Your silly)

No, I’ve got no time to play your silly games

  7. Interesting essay Joe J did on the smoking ban/nanny state.

    Take responsibility for oneself!
Like The Proclaimers song suggests – too many people like the in-denial song character – “Ma shrivelled liver’s got nought tae dae wi the whisky” – warcry of most heavy spirit boozers.

  8. Mark…which silly games are we referring to here? (your move by the way)

…there will always be a proportion of legitimate complaints – and I will just reiterate that I was not defending the practice of lowest-common-denominator warnings on drinks cups, merely giving you the nanny-state/insurance company logic that has led to the warning being there in the first place – so a little bemused as to why I am on the receiving end of your frustrations;I AGREE with you that it’s nonsense…but also, with heavy heart, know that it is done to protect the company from spurious claims against them. As merely the messenger here, can I request a Kevlar vest please

  9. Haha – touche, Pat. You are right, you WERE merely pointing it out.

It was just the “not that we are becoming as bad as Americia in terms of compensation culture or anything” comment that reminded me of the chorus words:
    “Everybody’s a victim
    We’re becoming like the usa”

  10. and absolutely agree that with James on taking responsibility for one’s self (wherever possible)…but what about those who don’t…and who everyone else has to carry the can for?

  11. Iwasn’t shootong the messenger.I merely pointed out the riculousness of the situation – abrasively. You tried to politicise it and bring some reason or meaning (not your own I agree)to a load of PC pish.

  12. PC pish it may be…but it’s PC pish we are forced to live with because – as you both touch on in the lyrics section – we live in a culture that has created the victim mentality (which equates to blame+claim) amongst those who won’t take responsibility for themselves; an…although being abrasive might be amusing and help you let off steam…I ay least want to try to understand why the PC pish exists…which, in turn, makes it bearable. And it is not me who has politicised it…blame Thatcher and (Bush’s catamite) Blair who decided that moeny was the source of all satisfaction and success and that decreed that the nation should be nannied into a state of atrophied responsibility, spoon-fed pulp and encouraged into riduiculous levels of debt…while Marx deemed religion to be the opiate of the masses, it is consumption (visual/oral/financial)that now keeps the masses both entertained and infantile; et voila: life apparently now requires a health warning. Pish – oh aye – the whole blooming lot of it
